Information for Students

  1. Find out if your Regional Fair offers the EnviroExpo Special Award and enter a project.
We want as many young Canadians as possible to compete for the EnviroExpo Special Award at their regional fair.  If you have entered the science fair in the past, check out how you might enter again with a project that meets the criteria for the new award.

For project ideas, talk to your teachers, check out websites, magazines, or environmental organizations to find out what the issues are and how you can develop a project to address one of them.

For ideas on how to incorporate art into your project, talk to a teacher, friend or parent or look through our sample project page.  You can also send us an email at askus@viaenviroexpo.ca

  2. If you want to enter a project and aren’t sure how, talk to your science teachers.
The VIA EnviroExpo Team and YSC are working to ensure that all schools in Canada and all science teachers know about the EnviroExpo program.  Ask your teacher how to get your school enrolled in your regional science fair, and how to start on a project.

YSC also has a student mentorship program called SMARTS.  SMARTS, has two experts, your age, who can answer questions on doing an EnviroExpo project. Click here for more information or go to the YSC website at www.youthscience.ca

You can also find more information in the FAQ section of the site. Or contact us at askus@viaenviroexpo.ca

  3. If you don’t want to enter a project but still want to get involved, volunteer!
The regional fairs are always looking for volunteers to help them to organize and deliver terrific fairs.  Ask your teacher how to contact the organizing committee of your local fair or check the YSC website at www.youthscience.ca for details on how to contact fair officials and get involved.
  4. If you are going to the Canada-Wide Science Fair, nominate your project for the Environmental Innovation division.
Check out the eligibility criteria on this site or talk to your teachers or fair officials to find out if your project qualifies for the Environmental Innovation division at the Canada-Wide Science Fair.  Winning projects at each level get a $10,000 scholarship plus cash prizes.  You could also win a trip to Ottawa!

Information for Teachers

  1. Encourage students to develop projects that incorporate art into science to meet the requirements of the EnviroExpo Special Award.
The EnviroExpo Special Award is all about expanding the way students and teachers think about project-based science.  Help your students incorporate an element of art into their science projects and see just how creative they can be!  Art should be introduced to improve the way the project is communicated to others.  For example, a student could create a painting on their display board that illustrated what the world would look like with their discovery in use.  For more ideas, check out the sample project page on this website or talk to the art teachers at your school.
  2. Tell your students to enter their local science fair.Talk to your region’s science fair officials to get your school entered into your regional science fair.
Encourage regional officials to offer the EnviroExpo Special Award.
  3. If students at your school are selected to compete at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, tell them about the Environmental Innovation division.
The Environmental Innovation division at the CWSF is a self-nominated division so students must register themselves in order to compete.  Make sure all students going to CWSF know about this exciting new division and encourage them to enter.  All the information about the Environmental Innovation division can be found here.

Information for Parents

  1. Tell your son or daughter and their friends about the EnviroExpo Special Awards at the Regional Fair level.
If you have a son or daughter or know a young person who is interested in science or art or the environment, encourage them to find out if the EnviroExpo Special Award is available at their regional fair.  If your child wants to get involved but has never competed in a science fair before, encourage them to talk to their science teacher about becoming involved.
  2. If you are involved in local clubs, teams or groups with your children, talk to them about the EnviroExpo Special Award.
We want as many youth as possible to enter the EnviroExpo Special Award at their regional fair and we need everyone’s help to achieve that goal.  Talking to kids that you see on a regular basis about how they can get involved in science fairs and encouraging them to enter or even just to visit a fair is very important.
  3. If your child is selected at their regional fair to compete at the  Canada-Wide Science Fair, talk to them about entering their project in the Environmental Innovation division.
If your child is selected to attend the Canada-Wide Science Fair, talk to them about whether they are eligible to enter their project in the Environmental Innovation division.  If you aren’t sure they will be eligible, encourage your child to talk to their science teacher or regional fair official to find out more.  You can also send us an email at askus@viaenviroexpo.ca
  4. Find our how you can volunteer at your regional science fair or the CWSF.
Both regional science fairs and the Canada-Wide Science Fair are reliant on dedicated volunteers to ensure success.  Contact your local fair official by clicking here or visit the YSC website at www.youthscience.ca to see how you can get involved.
